A mild-steel tensile specimen is 40 mm in diameter with a gauge length of 200 mm. A load of 40 kN, within the limit of proportionality, extends it by 0.0304 mm. The yield load is 161 kN, the maximum load is 242 kN and the gauge length at fracture is 249 mm. Find (i) Young’s modulus (GPa), (ii) the yield-point stress (MPa), (iii) the ultimate stress (MPa) and (iv) the percentage elongation (%).
