Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA)- 2026
Post: Assistant Engineer
Exam Date: 17.01.2026
Time: 2 Hours Total Marks: 100 (Technical 40, GK 20, Bangla 20, English 20)
Technical:
1) Define wind power density. A site has an air pressure of 1004.1 mbar, an air temperature of 25°C and a wind speed of 7 m/s at a height of 120 m. Calculate the wind power density.
Solution: Wind power density is the power available in the wind per unit swept area normal to the wind (W/m²): WPD = ½ρV³.
∴ Wind power density = 201.2 W/m² (Answer)
2) A wind turbine produces 200 kW at a wind speed of 7 m/s. Determine its output when the wind speed rises to 10 m/s.
Solution: P ∝ V³ (same ρ, A and Cp):
∴ Power output = 583.1 kW (Answer)
3) A power plant burns rice husk at 500 kg/h. The calorific value of rice husk is 14 MJ/kg and the plant efficiency is 25%. Calculate (a) the heat input per hour and (b) the power output.
Solution:
∴ (a) 7000 MJ/h; (b) 486.1 kW (Answer)
4) Write the constituents of biogas.
Solution:
| Constituent | Share (% by volume) |
|---|---|
| Methane (CH₄) | 50–75 |
| Carbon dioxide (CO₂) | 25–45 |
| Nitrogen (N₂) | 0–5 |
| Hydrogen (H₂) | 0–1 |
| Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) | 0–1 |
| Oxygen (O₂), ammonia (NH₃), water vapour | Traces |
5) What are rare earth elements (REEs)? Name them.
Solution: REEs are a group of 17 metallic elements — the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium — with similar chemical properties, found together in ores. They are “rare” because economically mineable deposits are rare. They are used in permanent magnets of wind turbines and EV motors, batteries, catalysts and electronics.
Lanthanum (La), Cerium (Ce), Praseodymium (Pr), Neodymium (Nd), Promethium (Pm), Samarium (Sm), Europium (Eu), Gadolinium (Gd), Terbium (Tb), Dysprosium (Dy), Holmium (Ho), Erbium (Er), Thulium (Tm), Ytterbium (Yb), Lutetium (Lu), Scandium (Sc) and Yttrium (Y).
6) Distinguish between onshore and offshore wind turbines.
Solution:
| S.No. | Onshore Wind Power | Offshore Wind Power |
|---|---|---|
| 1. | The wind turbines are installed on land. | The wind turbines are installed in the sea or in large lakes. |
| 2. | The wind is weaker and more turbulent. | The wind is stronger and steadier. |
| 3. | The capacity factor is about 25–40%. | The capacity factor is about 40–60%. |
| 4. | The turbine size is typically 2–6 MW. | The turbine size is typically 8–15 MW or more. |
| 5. | A simple concrete foundation is used. | A monopile, jacket or floating foundation is used. |
| 6. | The capital and maintenance costs are lower. | The capital and maintenance costs are much higher due to marine works and subsea cables. |
| 7. | Corrosion is low. | Corrosion is high because of salt water. |
| 8. | The main impacts are noise, visual effect and land use. | It affects the marine ecosystem but has less conflict over land use. |
7) Write the names of the components of a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT).
Solution: Rotor blades, hub, pitch system, nacelle, low-speed (main) shaft, main bearing, gearbox, high-speed shaft, mechanical brake, generator, power converter and controller, yaw drive and yaw bearing, anemometer and wind vane, cooling system, tower and transformer.
8) State the barriers to the development of sustainable energy in Bangladesh.
Solution:
- High initial investment and limited access to low-cost finance
- Scarcity of land in a densely populated country
- Low wind speed in most inland areas
- Weak grid, lack of energy storage and intermittency of solar and wind
- Inconsistent policy implementation, slow approvals and unclear tariffs
- Dependence on imported technology; little local manufacturing
- Shortage of skilled manpower and research facilities
- Dominance of and subsidies for fossil fuels
- Low public awareness; climate risks (cyclone, flood, salinity) in coastal areas
9) Define energy mix and explain it in the context of Bangladesh.
Solution: The energy mix is the combination of primary energy sources (gas, oil, coal, hydro, solar, wind, biomass, nuclear, imported electricity) used to meet the energy or electricity demand of a country, expressed as percentage shares.
In Bangladesh, electricity generation depends mainly on natural gas (domestic and imported LNG), followed by coal, liquid fuel (furnace oil, diesel) and imported electricity from India; renewables (Kaptai hydro, solar home systems, rooftop and utility solar, small wind and biomass) contribute only a few per cent. As domestic gas reserves decline and fuel imports strain foreign exchange, the plan is to diversify the mix by increasing renewable energy (target about 20% by 2030), importing regional hydropower, using efficient gas and coal plants and adding nuclear power (Rooppur).
