Mechanical Engineering Question Bank

Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB)- 2026

Post: Assistant Engineer (Mechanical)

Exam Date: 09.10.2026 Exam Hall: BUET

Time: 60 Min Total Marks: 100 (Departmental 80, Non-Departmental 20)

Departmental:

1) Draw the block diagram with the T–s diagram of a Rankine cycle with a superheater and a single-stage open feedwater heater for regeneration.

Solution: [Repeated question: BGFCL-2021]

Regenerative Rankine cycle with superheater and one open feedwater heater
T–s diagram of the regenerative Rankine cycle

Processes: 1–2 condensate pump (PC → PH); 2–3 mixing with bled steam in the open feedwater heater (state 3 is saturated liquid at PH); 3–4 feed pump (PH → PB); 4–5 heating, evaporation and superheating at constant PB; 5–6 expansion to PH where a fraction y is extracted; 6–7 expansion of the remaining (1 − y) to PC; 7–1 condensation.

Per kg of steam through the boiler:

Regeneration raises the mean temperature of heat addition, so the cycle efficiency increases. The open feedwater heater also acts as a deaerator.

2) In a gas turbine running on the Brayton cycle, intake air at 30°C is compressed through a pressure ratio of 8:1 by the compressor. Find the temperature of the compressed air if the compressor has an isentropic efficiency of 85%. Find the cycle efficiency if the turbine has an isentropic efficiency of 80% and the maximum temperature is 800°C.

Note: Some examinees recalled the data as T~1~ = 300 K and T~max~ = 900°C. With these values: T~2~ = 586.4 K, w~T~ = 422.5 kJ/kg, w~net~ = 134.6 kJ/kg and η = 22.8%.

Solution: Given, T1 = 30 + 273 = 303 K, rp = 8, ηC = 0.85, ηT = 0.80, T3 = 800 + 273 = 1073 K, γ = 1.4, cp = 1.005 kJ/kg·K.

Compressor outlet temperature:

T–s diagram of the actual Brayton cycle

Cycle efficiency:

∴ Compressed air temperature, T2 = 592.3 K (319.3°C); Cycle efficiency = 19.8% (Answer)

3) A fluid is flowing through a 98.1 m long, 100 mm diameter pipeline. The flow rate is 0.0314 m³/s and the kinematic viscosity is 800 mm²/s. The pipeline has 8 sockets (loss coefficient K = 2 each) and 5 tees (K = 6 each). Determine the Reynolds number and the total head loss.

Solution: Given, L = 98.1 m, D = 0.1 m, Q = 0.0314 m³/s, ν = 800 mm²/s = 8 × 10−4 m²/s.

Since Re < 2000, the flow is laminar.

Major loss: For laminar flow, f = 64/Re.

Minor losses:

∴ Re = 500 (laminar); Total head loss = 139.8 m (Answer)

4) Draw the performance characteristic curve of a centrifugal pump. Also draw a typical system characteristic curve on the same graph. Hence locate the design point and the operating point.

Solution: [Repeated question: NWPGCL-2018, NWPGCL-2026]

Centrifugal pump H–Q and η–Q curves with system curve
  • Pump H–Q curve (constant speed): head is maximum at zero discharge (shut-off head) and falls as discharge increases.
  • System curve: Hsys = Hs + kQ², i.e. static head plus friction and fitting losses which vary with Q².
  • Design point (D): the best-efficiency point (BEP), at which the pump efficiency is maximum; the pump is selected for this duty.
  • Operating (duty) point (O): the intersection of the pump H–Q curve and the system curve; the pump actually runs at this point.
  • Ideally O ≈ D. Throttling, speed change or impeller trimming shifts the operating point.

5) The following observations were made during a tensile test on a mild steel specimen 40 mm in diameter and 200 mm long: elongation with 40 kN load (within limit of proportionality), δl = 0.0304 mm; yield load = 6 kN; maximum load = 242 kN; length of specimen at fracture = 249 mm. Determine: (i) Young’s modulus of elasticity, and (ii) Percentage elongation.

Solution: Given, d = 40 mm, L = 200 mm, P = 40 kN, δl = 0.0304 mm, Lf = 249 mm. (The yield and maximum loads are not required for the two answers asked.)

∴ E = 2.094 × 105 N/mm² (209.4 GPa); Percentage elongation = 24.5% (Answer)

6) Two parallel shafts, 600 mm apart, are to be connected by two spur gears. One shaft runs at 360 rpm and the other at 120 rpm. Find the diameters and the number of teeth of the gears if the circular pitch is 25 mm.

Solution: [Repeated question: DPDC-2020]

Since the number of teeth must be a whole number, the pitch circle diameters are recalculated:

∴ Pinion: 38 teeth, d = 302.4 mm; Gear: 114 teeth, d = 907.2 mm (Answer)

7) For the transistor circuit shown (NPN, β = 120, RB = 1000 kΩ, RC = 2 kΩ, RE = 1 kΩ, both supplies +15 V, a diode in the emitter branch), determine all node voltages and branch currents.

Given circuit

Solution: Assume silicon devices: VBE = 0.7 V, diode drop VD = 0.7 V, transistor in the active region (IC = βIB, IE = (β + 1)IB).

KVL around the base loop:

Node voltages (with respect to ground):

Quantity Value
IB (through RB) 12.13 μA
IC (through RC) 1.456 mA
IE = ID (through RE) 1.468 mA
VB / VE / VX 2.868 V / 2.168 V / 1.468 V
VC 12.09 V
VCE 9.92 V

Since VC > VB > VE and VCE = 9.92 V ≫ VCE(sat), the transistor operates in the active region.

8) The periodic current waveform is shown below. The peak current is 8 A and the resistance is 18 Ω. Determine (a) the RMS current and (b) the average power.

Given triangular current waveform

Solution: Over the rising half of a period, i = (2Im/T)t. The falling half is symmetrical.

∴ (a) Irms = 4.62 A; (b) Average power = 384 W (Answer)

(a) North (b) South (c) East (d) West

X and Y are both 40 sin45° ≈ 28.3 m south of Z; X lies to the west and Y to the east. Hence Y is due East of X.
