Departmental (Written):

1) Find the force (in newton) required to reduce the diameter of a cylindrical steel rod from 150 mm to 149 mm. Take E = 200 × 10⁴ kgf/cm² and Poisson’s ratio = 0.3.

$E = 200 \times 1 0^{4} kgf/cm^{2} = 200 \times 1 0^{4} \times 9.81 \times 1 0^{4} = 1.962 \times 1 0^{11} N/m^{2}$

$σ = E ε = 1.962 \times 1 0^{11} \times 0.02222 = 4.36 \times 1 0^{9} N/m^{2}$

$F = σ A = 4.36 \times 1 0^{9} \times \frac{π}{4} (0.15)^{2} = 4.36 \times 1 0^{9} \times 0.01767 = 7.705 \times 1 0^{7} N$

2) A thermal power plant consists of two 60 MW units, each running for 8000 hours, and one 30 MW unit running for 2000 hours per year. The energy produced by the plant is 876 × 10⁶ kWh per year. Determine the plant load factor and the plant use factor. Consider the maximum load as equal to the plant capacity.

Solution: [Repeated question: SGFL-2023] $Average load = \frac{876 \times 1 0 ^{6}}{8760} = 100, 000 kW = 100 MW, Maximum load = 2 \times 60 + 30 = 150 MW$

$Load factor = \frac{100}{150} = 0.67$

$Plant use factor = \frac{Energy produced}{Capacity \times hours of operation}$

$= \frac{876 \times 1 0 ^{6}}{( 2 \times 60 , 000 \times 8000 ) + ( 30 , 000 \times 2000 )} = \frac{876 \times 1 0 ^{6}}{1.02 \times 1 0 ^{9}} = 0.86$

∴ Plant load factor = 0.67; Plant use factor = 0.86 (Answer)

3) The static and stagnation pressures in a horizontal water pipe are measured as shown. Determine the velocity at the centre of the pipe.

Piezometer (1) and Pitot tube (2) in a water pipe

Solution: The difference between the stagnation head (Pitot tube) and the static head (piezometer) is the velocity head: h = 16 cm = 0.16 m.

$V = 2 g h = 2 \times 9.81 \times 0.16 = 1.77 m/s$

∴ Velocity at the centre of the pipe = 1.77 m/s (Answer)

4) The calorific value of a fuel is 27 MJ/L and the fuel consumption is 20,000 L/h. If the work output of the engine is 100 MW, determine the thermal efficiency.

Solution: $Heat input = \frac{20 , 000 \times 27}{3600} = 150 MJ/s = 150 MW, η_{t h} = \frac{100}{150} = 0.6667$

∴ Thermal efficiency = 66.67% (Answer)
